Cornea
The cornea is a slanted, transparent layer located at the front of the eye.

It focuses light and protects the eye from external factors, and plays a vital role in vision.
A person who is not an ophthalmologist can assess the transparency of the cornea, surface brightness, damage and sensitivity of the cornea using a cotton swab and local lighting. Ophthalmologists use various devices to assess the morphology and function of the cornea.:
  • Biomicroscopy: Used for binocular examination of the cornea and other structures of the anterior segment. Light rays of different thicknesses are emitted from different angles, the cornea is magnified with a biomicroscope and examined. This is the most commonly used inspection method.
  • Keratometry: This is a measurement of the refractive power of the cornea. It is used before implantation of contact lenses and intraocular lenses.
  • Topography: used in topographic analysis of the anterior surface of the cornea.
  • Pachymetry: measuring the thickness of the cornea.
  • Mirror microscopy: shows the number and structure of endothelial cells.
  • Estesiometry: used to assess the sensitivity of the cornea.
  • Corneal examination by staining: defects on the surface of the cornea can be seen using the floressein and bengali pink solution
